Robusto vs. Toro: choose by dimensions
Start with the length and ring gauge of the cigar you’re buying. The format name alone won’t settle the choice.
Updated
At a glance
Choose Robusto for the shorter format within the line you want. Choose Toro when you want more length and have room for an unhurried session. Check the width too: Liga Privada’s Toro is longer than its Robusto, but slightly narrower.
More detail on choosing between them
- Robusto: start here if a shorter cigar is your priority. It does not promise a particular finish time.
- Toro: consider it when you want the longer format. Extra length does not establish better flavor or greater strength.
- Undecided? Compare both sizes in one line and wrapper. Start with the format that fits your available time, then explore the other before committing to a box.
The actual sizes matter more than the names
Robusto and Toro are format names, not universal measurements. Drew Estate lists both Liga Privada No. 9 and T52 in a 5 × 54 Robusto and a 6 × 52 Toro. My Father Connecticut uses different dimensions for the same two names.
The first number is length in inches. The second is ring gauge: diameter measured in sixty-fourths of an inch. In the Liga pairing, Toro adds an inch of length while Robusto has the larger diameter. “Bigger” needs a second question: longer, or wider?
Manufacturer specifications checked October 11, 2026. On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways.
| Line | Robusto | Toro |
|---|---|---|
| Liga Privada T52 | 5 × 54 | 6 × 52 |
| Liga Privada No. 9 | 5 × 54 | 6 × 52 |
| My Father Connecticut | 5¼ × 52 | 6½ × 54 |
The comparison basis: hold the line and wrapper steady while changing format. T52 Robusto versus T52 Toro explores size within T52. T52 Robusto versus My Father Connecticut Toro changes the blend as well, so it cannot isolate your size preference.
Time, width and flavor: three separate decisions
Less length: Robusto in these pairs
If you’re choosing around a shorter session, start with the shorter cigar in the line. These manufacturer specifications establish length, not a measured smoking time. This page has no timed house test and promises no fixed number of minutes. Leave room to enjoy the cigar at your own pace. Call: Robusto for less length; no countdown guarantee.
More length: Toro in these pairs
If you have an open evening and want a longer format, Toro is the longer choice in all three examples. That is a reason to consider it, not proof that every Toro will outlast every Robusto from another blend. Call: Toro when more length fits the occasion.
Width: preference call
Look at the second number independently. Liga Privada reverses the easy assumption that Toro must also be thicker; My Father Connecticut’s Toro is both longer and wider than its Robusto. Choose the diameter you prefer rather than relying on the name. Call: check the exact ring gauge.
Flavor and strength: no automatic winner
Drew Estate explains that different sizes can present a blend differently. Its size lists do not establish which format you will prefer. This page makes no measured strength comparison and offers no rule that shorter means stronger or longer means milder. Call: explore both formats within the same line.
Price and value · compare the selected package
Compare the exact size, wrapper and package on the product page. A higher package total does not establish a higher per-cigar price when pack counts differ. Confirm the count before dividing the price; neither a format label nor an inventory quantity proves how many cigars the purchase includes.
This article quotes no static store price and names no value winner. Product options and availability can change. Call: use the current selected offer and a confirmed pack count.
Compare the formats on one product page
Use the Size selector on the existing listing. Keep Robusto and Toro distinct from Petaca, Tubo or Toro Gordo options; those labels can refer to different packaging or dimensions.

Choosing between Liga blends as well? Read No. 9 vs. T52 for that separate decision. For an in-person visit, check Tobacco Leaf’s store and lounge hours. Ask about the exact size and package; an online option does not establish physical singles availability.
Questions about cigar format
What does a 52 ring gauge mean?
It means a diameter of 52/64 of an inch, or 13/16 of an inch. Ring gauge measures width; it does not state length, package quantity or strength.
Is Toro Gordo the same size as Toro?
Do not treat them as interchangeable. My Father Connecticut lists Toro at 6½ × 54 and Toro Gordo at 6 × 60: the Gordo is shorter and wider in that line. Read the exact specification before selecting it.
Which size should a beginner choose?
Start with the line you want to explore and the dimensions that fit your preference and available time. A Robusto label alone does not establish a mild blend, an easy draw or a predictable smoking time. Ask for help choosing the blend as well as the size.
Does Robusto or Toro tell me how many cigars are in a box?
No. Format describes the cigar; package count is a separate offer detail. Confirm the selected product’s count before comparing box totals or calculating a price per cigar.
